typhoid teachings

Lessons from typhoid
  • Sometimes when you're sick, it's better just to let yourself be sick - no running, no working, no being hard on yourself. Revolutionary.
  • There are nice hospitals in Kenya!! The one I went to on Sunday in Kisumu had a shiny white interior (not like the Bungoma hospital, with its crowded benches and "DON'T LIVE IN THE SAME BED WITH CHICKEN, DON'T EAT SICK/DEAD CHICKEN" poster) and got blood, stool, and urine samples from me before issuing a diagnosis. I haven't even given a stool sample in the US, and to be honest I couldn't be sure of a repeat performance... but the intimidation and skepticism in the eyes of the lab technician when he asked, "Really? You can't even produce a little one?" would help anyone through performance anxiety.
  • Medication isn't perfect: strong medication can be as poisonous as the illness itself, and the side effects might make it even worse.
  • It is a marvelous thing to not be sick anymore.

Amber,
Great lessons, especially about letting yourself feel rotten. I find I keep needing to learn that one over and over.
Love,
